Ears-should be set rather high, of medium size, rather wide at the base and tapering to a rounded point. They should be carried close to the head. Sometimes the ears will be taped down when the puppy is young to assure the look of closeness to the head. Muzzle-should be long, deep and powerful. The lips clean, closely fitting the jaws. Nose-should be black, brown or liver, in keeping with the color of the dog. No other colored nose is permissible. A black nose should be accompanied by dark eyes, a brown or liver nose with amber eyes. Bite-jaws level and strong with well-developed teeth, especially the canines or holders. Scissors bite preferred.

It should should be carried with a slight curve upwards.
Forequarters
The shoulders should be sloping, clean and muscular, denoting speed. Elbows close to the body. The forelegs should be perfectly straight, strong, and heavy in bone. The feet should be compact with well-arched toes, round, tough, elastic pads, protected by hair between the toes and pads. Dewclaws are usually removed.
Hindquarters
In the hind legs, the muscles should be clean, well defined and hocks well down. Feet as in front.
Color
Light wheaten, wheaten, and red wheaten. A little white on the chest and toes permissible. Brown nose and black nose.
Ridge
The hallmark of this breed is the ridge on the back which is formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. The ridge must be regarded as the characteristic feature of the breed. The ridge should be clearly defined, tapering and symmetrical. It should start immediately behind the shoulders and continue to a point between the prominence of the hips and should contain two identical crowns (whorls of hair) directly opposite each other. The lower edge of the crowns (whorls of hair) should not extend further down the ridge than one third of the ridge.

Temperament
Dignified and even tempered. Reserved with strangers. People and animal friendly. A very happy breed of dog.

MORE HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a native of South Africa. Its long history dates back to the early 16th century when European settlers found a domesticated dog with the Hottentot tribe. This dog, which had a distinctive ridge of fur along its spine, was selectively bred with dogs from the European continent to develop a new breed now known as the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Hence the Rhodesian Ridgeback is the result of the efforts of hunters, breeders and dedicated people who have managed to cross dogs and get the best out of breeds like the Pointer, Greyhound, and Mastiff, amoung others.

This breed was developed to meet the wide-ranging needs of a hunting dog in Africa. The Rhodesian Ridgebacks have proved very capable of being able to withstand the rigours of the African bush and go for days without food or water while tracking lions, hoping to hold them at bay for their master, in addition to performing such diverse tasks as flushing a few wild partridges, pulling down wounded stags, or guarding the farm. While many of these traits still contribute greatly to the breed's temperament, the Ridgebacks of today are more often found in the show ring or in the home of a loving family. The Rhodesian Ridgeback makes an attentive and loyal companion that is devoted to its family.
